Passing On Learning
The David James Foundation Center shares its site with the Samaritan Trust; a charity who offer street children of Blantyre the opportunity to have somewhere to live and learn until they reach 16 years old. These children are often from rural areas who have drifted to the city in search of better opportunities. The Samaritan Trust take in these children and not only feed them and give them a bed, but also teach them basic skills in construction and agriculture with the aim of reintroducing them back into their original communities as adults.
It is here on the land adjacent to the Samaritan Trust that the David James Foundation project managers teach these young children the farming techniques that they have perfected in order to produce the highest yield at the lowest cost. These children are then taught and encouraged to pass on this information to their farming neighbors when they return to their rural homes. The David James Foundation follows these 'graduates' and their farms to see how their crops and their communities are benefiting and offer support when needed.
This technology has already improved yields and is being taught to a new generation of farmers who are now teaching it to their friends and neighbours. Adopting and teaching new techniques for growing maize is only one of the many activities that the David James Foundation is using to improve life for the subsistence farmers of Malawi.
